Folasade Akoni: A Butterfly Lights Beside Us
“A butterfly lights beside us, like a sunbeam….
and for a brief moment, its glory
and beauty, belong to our world……
but then it flies on again, and although
we wish it could have stayed,
we are so thankful to have seen it at all”
Over the years, I have lost some people close to me. Prior to their deaths, we had stopped communicating for months (even years). There was this particular friend who had stopped talking to me. My pride also took over me and I refused to call her (although I was secretly checking on her well-being through a mutual friend).
When I heard of her demise, I was numb all over. I did not attend the service of songs because I refused to believe she was gone. It was at the cemetery, that reality dawned on me when I saw her being lowered into the grave.
Right there, our mutual friend told me that she was always asking after me too. To say I was devastated would be an understatement. I wished I could turn back the hands of time. I wished I could tell her that I forgave her a long time ago. I wished I could ask her to forgive me too. I wished and wished a million things.
Oh! Did I cry my eyes and heart out? In a moment, memories of our good times together flooded my mind. She was a very good friend and I wouldn’t have traded the brief moment I knew her for anything. I valued our friendship but I lost the chance to tell her that.
“We meet for a reason, either you are a blessing or a lesson” – Frank Ocean
No man is an island. People come into our lives every day. Some stay and some go. We are all surrounded by loved ones; some of whom we keep in touch with, and some of whom we don’t (for one reason or the other).
Let us cherish the people in our lives; people we hold dear. Take a “minute” out of your busy schedules and let them know you treasure them.
